Role of the MPGS

Changes to the structure of the Army and the increased threat of terrorist attack have resulted in the creation of the Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS). This is a newly formed area of service and lies within the Provost Branch of the Adjutant General's Corps under the direction of Provost Marshal (Army), who is the Director and Head of Service. The aim of the MPGS is to rationalise guarding arrangements at sites where soldiers normally live and work. The MPGS replaces previously civilian held duties with highly trained, experienced and armed soldiers.

The MPGS is responsible for maintaining security at Army sites. The duties are varied and include:

  • Controlling entry and exit access to a site
  • Managing control room operations and ensuring all visitors are dealt with efficiently
  • Patrolling site perimeters and taking necessary action to preserve perimeter security
  • Dog handling opportunities are available

All MPGS Units are formed under the command of the Units Commanding Officer for the site to which they are deployed with Technical Evaluation and Professional Standards assessed and maintained by PM (Army). A structured rank system within each MPGS Unit provides the opportunity for promotion up to Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) and Warrant Rank. Promotion is based on your performance throughout your tour of duty within the MPGS.
