The Adjutant General's Corps was formed on 6 April 1992 from the Royal Army Pay Corps, the Corps of Royal Military Police, the Military Provost Staff Corps, the Royal Army Educational Corps, the Army Legal Corps and the Staff Clerks from the Royal Army Ordnance Corps.

At the same time, the Women's Royal Army Corps was disbanded and its members were transferred to other Corps of the Army, including the Adjutant General's Corps.

The new Corps consisted of four branches:

Staff and Personnel Support (SPS)

Provost (Royal Military Police (RMP)and Military Provost Staff (MPS)

Educational and Training Services (ETS)

Army Legal Services (ALS)

On 5 April 1993 the clerks from the Royal Corps of Transport, The Royal Pioneer Corps and the Army Catering Corps were transferred to the Adjutant General's Corps on formation of the Royal Logistics Corps. On 1 July 1993, the clerks from all other Arms and Services were subsumed into SPS Branch. 

The Military Provost Guard Service (MPGS) formed in 1997 and are part of Provost Branch.
