Support to operations

The ETS provides support to operations in the following ways:

Deployed Educational Capability

In support of medium scale deployments (such as Afghanistan and Iraq) ETS Officers have deployed to operational theatres as either a Learning Development Officer (LDO) working in a Theatre Education Centre or as a Battle Group Learning Development Officer (BG LDO) attached to one of the Battle Groups.

ETS have also provided specialist support as augmentees in the areas of Cultural Specialists, Info Ops, Media, Influence Ops, Psyops, and Mentoring training.

Battle Group LDO (BG LDO)

The role of the BG LDO is to provide cultural awareness training and language support prior to and during operations to the BG. They also deliver 1st Line ETS advice on education and training as well as resettlement advice where required. They also conduct regimental duties and tasks within the BG.

Cultural and Language Advisor

ETS officers manage and deliver language training with some deploying in Military Linguist or Cultural Specialist roles.

Short Term Training Teams

STTTs provide training support and training development advice to overseas armies, such as training and mentoring at the Afghanistan National Army Officer Academy (ANA OA).

Army Library and Information Services (ALIS)

Library facilities, both on-line and hard copy, are available through the Theatre Education Centre. ALIS also supply the paperback books and board games that are sent to deployed personnel on operations.

Functional Skills support

Functional Skills support is delivered to deployed personnel via the BG LDO or in the Theatre Education Centre. This service allows personnel to gain nationally recognised qualifications whilst they are deployed and prevents soldiers being career fouled through not possessing the requisite educational qualifications for promotion.

Resettlement Signposting

BG LDOs and the staff of the Theatre Education Centre offer a resettlement signposting service to assist potential service leavers.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL)

ETS Officers are enrolled on CELTA courses so that they can provide English Language Training on operations to soldiers and officers of foreign armies, high ranking military and government officials as well as interpreters.

Recruiting information

Become part of the ETS and help continue the education of soldiers and officers. Roles include Learning Development Officer and Foundation College Instructor

As the Army Reserve grows to a trained strength of 32,000, the ETS(R) is being expanded to deliver the support needed to sustain the new units
