Why we have the best social life

Aberdeen Universities' Officers Training Corps prides itself in having one of the best reputations around for its social calendar. This is improved upon every year, with more and more parties and formal events being slotted into the busy program. 

Social events are seen as a way of educating cadets in mess etiquette, and to give them a taste of life in a regular army Officers Mess. The officer cadets have their own Mess with a bar that is certainly among the cheapest in Aberdeen, and always proves very popular, be it after a tuesday training night or on social events.

The AUOTC Mess

The Officers Mess is known the world over for being a lively place to relax and socialise. 

The Mess is full of traditions and  membership is extremely exclusive. 

Of course we have an Officers Mess within AUOTC, which is open on training evenings and is located in the RSB main building. 

The Mess spirit and 'the bar' come with us on weekends away to other training camps. It is also available for private hire at a very reasonable price, and hosts a variety of functions.

The AUOTC Bar

How many bars do you know that give you the best deals all the time?  We would make an educated guess and say none!  Aberdeen UOTC prides itself on being the best bar in Aberdeen. 

Entry is always free, the prices are always cheaper than any other bar, you don't have to pay for use of the cloak-room and the drink selection is massive!  "If Carlsberg did Student Bars, It would probably be the best 'Student Bar' in the world!"

Functions and Parties

Aberdeen UOTC has a very busy social calender this year.  In order to welcome our new intake of freshers, every year we throw a disco and bbq especially for them. 

Most years this is held on the second selection weekend, and is a great way to induct the new recruits into the unit and make them feel at home. 

Normally we spend some of our budget on inflatable attractions and this year there is rumoured to be a bouncy castle and a bungee run.

Annual Ball

A very significant event in the AUOTC calendar,  It consists of a formal meal at a venue usually chosen by the Officer Cadets within Aberdeen, then a return to the mess bar!

Burns Supper

This event speaks for itself really.  Our Burns Supper has been described as "the best Burns supper in Scotland".  This glowing quote came from none other than The General Officer Commanding 2nd Division when he visited AUOTC last year. 

With a quote like that and poetry and recitals (including the fantastic Tam 'O Shanter by our unit Adjutant), how can you go wrong?

'U' Company Dinner

A formal event in October, the purpose of this event is to remember the legacy of U company, the university contingent who fought in the First World War. 

As well as an excellent dinner, this event gives us a chance to remember the officer cadets of yesteryear who made the ultimate sacrifice through poems, readings and soldier's written accounts.
 
As well as all of these events, we have a very dedicated President of the Entertainments Committee (PEC), who works hard to throw as many parties throughout the year as they can. 

Some of which include Halloween, Bonfirenight, Christmas and many other themed parties.  If you have any ideas for a party then feel free to suggest them to the PEC for consideration.
