Sport
Sport is seen as a fundamental part of any training within the military, and this is echoed within AUOTC.
Officer cadets are encouraged to participate in sports at all levels, and in part officer cadets from AUOTC have represented the unit, Scotland and even the UK at various sports.
The main sports practiced at AUOTC are:
- Rugby
- Football
- Hockey
- Tug o' war.
Teams exist in all of these and new recruits are welcome to join up. Most of these teams already represent the OTC in local leagues. However, if you play a sport that isn't mentioned here, officer cadets are encouraged to start their own teams.
The main sporting event in the OTC calendar is Northern Lights. This inter-OTC competition is held every year at a location in Scotland, and sees all the Celtic OTCs (Glasgow & Strathclyde UOTC, City of Edinburgh UOTC, Tayforth UOTC, Queens UOTC and of course Aberdeen UOTC) competing against each other.
The competition is primarily military, sporting and Pipes and Drums. The following teams competitions take place at Northern Lights:
- Men's Rugby
- Women's Rugby
- Mixed Football, Hockey
- Tug o' War
- Military skills
- March and Shoot
- Drill competition
- Piping and Drumming events, both individual and team-based.
After all of the events have taken place and prizes awarded, there is normally a large party which is highly regarded as one of the best social events of the year.
