Adventurous Training

Whilst military training is a big part of the OTC, it is not the be all and end all.  Adventure Training (AT) also plays a significant role in unit activities.

The British Army recognises AT as being almost equally useful as military training for the leadership skills, team working and confidence it builds.

AUOTC takes its AT very seriously, and run several trips throughout the year specifically for AT, as well as most other camps having at least some element of AT included.

At Camp

Every Easter break officer cadets and permanent staff partake in a 1 week AT package known as Leadership Camp.

Recent camps have been held in Kinlochleven, Fort William, North Wales and Northern England, but one factor remains the same, the facilities are always excellent and some describe leadership camp as being the highlight of the training year, possibly because they get paid for having fun.

Here are some of the activities we get up to:

Hill walking, kayaking, rock climbing, abseiling, ice climbing, mountain biking, gorge walking, coast steering, power boating, sailing, land yachting, white water rafting, skiing and many more.

Expeditions

Aberdeen UOTC has a number of expeditions overseas every year. One such expedition is the ski trip known as Exercise Boars Blade. We also run summer expeditions each year.

It all depends on how many Officer Cadets have ideas for expeditions. In 2010 there are plans for multi level expeditions ranging from low level local training to overseas expeditions. If anyone was to join the unit this would be the year to do it!

AT Courses

Being part of the British Army has a massive benefit when it comes to AT.

Officer Cadets are given the opportunity to attend courses at the Joint Services Adventure Training Schools across the UK.

The majority of these courses are 5 days long and you get paid for attending them.

The following courses are available:

  • Canoeing
  • Caving
  • Freefall Parachuting
  • Gliding
  • Hang Gliding/Paragliding
  • Mountaineering
  • Offshore Sailing
  • Rock Climbing
  • Skiing
  • Sub-aqua

On top of these courses there is usually expeditions all over the world on offer.  Did we mention that we get paid for AT?
