Pipes and Drums
Tayforth Pipes & Drums
The Pipes and Drums are an important part of the unit, representing Tayforth by playing at various events. These include social functions like the Tayforth Annual Ball and the Cocktail Party, a parade which usually takes place in Dundee City Square. There are also three competitions, the Army Championships, TA Championships, and Ex Northern Lights. Our pipes and drums also regularly perform at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Although the Pipes and Drums are based at B Sqn, they encompass members from the whole contingent, A Sqn, B Sqn and C coy. Band practice takes place on Tuesday nights at Park Wynd in Dundee, and also on the occasional weekend throughout the academic year.
The band is led by Pipe Major Brian Elrick, formerly Pipe Major of Stonehaven Pipe Band, Aberdeen UOTC Drums and Pipes, and 51st Highland Division Pipes and Drums. Pipe Major Elrick is a former winner of the Macallan trophy at the Lorient Festival, and has also been a member of the Vale of Atholl Pipe Band and Polkemmet Pipe Band. He is currently in charge of the piping programme at Glenalmond College, and plays in Grade 1 with the Lothian & Borders Police Pipe Band.
Rates of pay begin at £35.33, with the opportunity to increase to £40.75, and members of the pipes and drums have no obligation to participate in the military training side of the OTC (although they can if they wish). The unit also covers all uniform and travel costs.
Unfortunately we cannot take on people who wish to learn to play the pipes or drums, but if you like the idea of turning your hobby into something financially rewarding, the TUOTC Pipes and Drums may be what you are looking for.
