Glasgow and Strathclyde
Glasgow and Strathclyde Universities Officers' Training Corps (GSUOTC) is a Territorial Army unit which strives to develop leadership skills in University students in the Glasgow area.
This is achieved through enjoyable and challenging military-based training in order to communicate the values, ethos and career opportunities of the British Army.
GSUOTC is open to students of the following Universities:
- Glasgow University
- Glasgow Caledonian University
- University of Strathclyde
- University of West Scotland
There is no call-up commitment and no obligation to military service. Students are free to leave the UOTC at any time, although many Officers and Officer Cadets from the Corps go on to join the Regular or Territorial Army once they leave University.
What We Do
The UOTC is split into 3 Training Companies, each providing training and activities for 1st, 2nd and 3rd/4th year students
1st Year - Waterloo Coy - Providing Basic Military Skills
2nd Year - Ypres Coy - Providing Advanced Military Skills
3rd/4th Year - Rhine Coy - Providing Leadership Training and Special to Arm Training
In your first year you can expect to learn how march, how to look after yourself in the field, basic first aid skills, how to use a radio and how to fire a rifle. In your second and third years you can learn more advanced skills such as map reading, leadership skills, how to give orders and some basic military tactics.
GSUOTC also has of 3 Sub-units which provide "special-to-arm" training. These are the infantry & signallers, the artillery, and engineers. In addition the unit has a fully established Pipes and Drums along with a Highland Dancing Team. Furthermore, members of GSUOTC participate regularly in a number of sporting competitions.
Training consists mainly of weekends at military training areas around Scotland, but we also organise a 2-week camp in the summer months. This gives the Officer Cadets a chance to put into practice all the skills they have learnt in the last year. The camp is usually at a larger training area in England or Wales and includes a five-day military exercise.
Currently about 160 male and female students participate in the Corps activities, which include adventurous training and social pursuits beside the normal military ones. In the last year students have had the opportunity to try skiing in Austria, parachuting in England and have gained outdoor instructor qualifications.
How to Join
Our recruiting period every year runs throughout September and October. Over this period there are a number of open days, freshers' discos and recruiting evenings when anyone can come up and find out more about the UOTC.
If you wish to join there will be a few forms to fill in and a medical to complete, but once you are in you will be able to participate in the wide range of activates that we have to offer - and get paid for it!
We are located in the West End of Glasgow near Byres Road, not far from Glasgow University. Our training night is Wednesday 6pm - 8pm, so feel free to call up and see us any evening.
