Leeds
Leeds University Officers Trainin Corps (LUOTC) is a Territorial Army organisation with the task of developing the character, leadership, and ability of students who join. The UOTCprovides a unique opportunity or those who want to get more out of student life.
LUOTC is a gathering of like-minded people who want more from university life than pure academic studies. It is a military unit but it is not about training students for war. Based in Carlton Barracks in Central Leeds we also have a detachment based in York.
Our training is military-based, focusing on developing the leadership potential which hides inside every one of you. Whilst many UOTC members do go on to join the Armed Forces, both full and part time, the majority have no further contact with the Forces after they graduate.
Whatever you choose to do after university, as a direct result of your time in Leeds UOTC we wish to see you graduate successfully and with significantly more to put on your CV than your peers!
Recruitment
Recruitment takes place at the beginning of each academic year. LUOTC recruitment teams will attend a number of Freshers Fairs although you may also apply directly to us by telephone or by email.
The teams are made up of Officer Cadets and Staff who will be able to answer all of your questions and tell you what life is really like. These teams are normally your first contact with LUOTC.
The Selection Process
The selection process begins with an Open Day at our Barracks in central Leeds. There you will get to meet and chat to current Officer Cadets, and have the opportunity to find out a bit more about LUOTC.
At some point during the day you will also have a short, relaxed interview with an Army Officer. This serves both as an opportunity for us to become acquainted with you, and a chance for you to ask any questions or concerns you may have.
You will also undergo a medical examination to determine if you are capable of taking part in training. There are restrictions for those applying who have an history of asthma, diabetes, mental illness, or epilepsy.
Finally, you must attend the Selection Weekend in order to join. This takes place at an Army base close to York and comprises a series of tests and interviews over two days.
Throughout the Selection Weekend you will be in a small group of other potential Officer Cadets. The tests will have a physical element, to determine your fitness and upper body strength. There are also further interviews, group discussions, and logic and command tests.
If you are succesful, you will enter 'A Company' and begin training the very next week.
