On the 1st September 2011, Sheffield and Leeds University Officers’ Training Corps were brought together under the Yorkshire Officers’ Training Regiment, which attracts students from universities across Yorkshire.
Sheffield University Officers’ Training Corps (SUOTC) is one the largest Officer Training Corps in the country and as an official society serves the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. SUOTC is located at Somme Barracks right in the heart of Sheffield city centre and the universities.
The UOTC continues to thrive, offering its members unrivalled opportunity for personal and leadership development through military and adventurous training as well as sport and other social activities.
Thinking of joining us?
We open our doors to new members every September and you can become a member of the UOTC in 4 easy steps:
Step 1 - Find us at a Freshers’ Fair
We have information displays at Freshers’ Fairs at both the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. These are manned by current members of the University Officers’ Training Corps who will be ready to answer all your questions. At some fairs we are present on specific dates only so it is important you check this website or Facebook for the most up to date information.
·University of Sheffield Freshers’ Fair 19th – 23rd September
·Sheffield Hallam University Freshers’ Fair 19th – 23rd September
Step 2 - Attend an Open Event
Join us for one of our Open Events at Somme Barracks (address at the bottom of this page). There will be a series of displays showcasing the activities we offer during your time at the UOTC. Refreshments will be provided and it will be a great opportunity to speak with Officer Cadets who have benefitted from up to three years with us.
Open Events at Somme Barracks:
·Open Day Saturday 24th September
·Open Night Tuesday 27th September
Step 3 – Attend a Medical
The medical assessment is mandated as it determines if you are medically fit to participate in adventurous training, military training and sports, amongst other challenging activities. The dates of these medicals are Saturday 1st and Sunday 2nd October 2016 (transport is provided).
Step 4 - Selection Weekend
You will be invited to attend a selection weekend on Friday 7th to Sunday 9th October.
This is a chance for you to experience the opportunities available to you should you decide to join. The weekend is about deciding if the UOTC is right for you and also provides the opportunity for the staff to see if you are right for the UOTC. The overall details of eligibility to join the UOTC will be explained to you at one of the Open Events.
If you cannot make it for any reason and still want to join us, then get in touch.
What We Do
Sheffield UOTC excels in teaching, coaching and mentoring military skills, leadership techniques, adventurous training and competitive sports. During your time with us you will improve your fitness, develop teamwork skills, gain in confidence and improve your problem-solving and planning skills. On joining, members become volunteer Officer Cadets (OCdts) of the Army Reserve and you will be paid wages for your time training or participating in events (rates of pay can be found at the link at the bottom of the page).
If you choose to remain with us throughout your time at university, you will gain valuable experience and qualifications to build your CV, giving you a considerable advantage over fellow students in a competitive job market. You will also have the opportunity to gain up to a Level 5 Award in Leadership and Management from the Institute of Leadership and Management.
The development opportunities and experiences mentioned above are delivered in the first instance through the means of military training including shooting, navigation, combat survival and soldiering skills. This training is modular and introduced at a basic, manageable pace. In order to progress through the training successfully and maximize the opportunities on offer,
Officer Cadets will be expected to attend the forecasted training evenings and weekends.
Sheffield UOTC has a fantastic sports society. We compete across Yorkshire and the Army in the following sports:
Football Rugby Orienteering Cross Country Swimming
Netball Hockey Triathlon Volleyball Fencing
We also compete in adventure races and long distance events (e.g. Nijmegen Marches and Tough Mudder).
Adventurous Training forms a unique and challenging platform to develop courage, leadership, teamwork and physical fitness. You will be given the opportunity to participate in overseas expeditions ranging from skiing in Tignes, scuba diving in Malta to trekking in Morocco. You will also be given numerous opportunities to take part in climbing, canoeing, sailing, kayaking or mountain biking within the UK throughout the year.
The Army runs courses which deliver a wide spectrum of proficiencies and qualifications; if you are interested and motivated you will have the option to progress to become a leader or an instructor.
Sheffield UOTC has a vibrant social calendar, ranging from Cocktail Parties and a formal Annual Dinner to Halloween and Burns nights. The social events rely upon the ‘Work Hard, Play Hard’ mentality, rewarding OCdts for the time and effort they put into their training, with events where they can let their hair down and have fun. These events also serve to build team cohesion amongst the OCdts, forming great memories and long lasting friendships.
