Southampton

Southampton University Officers Training Corps recruits students, both Under and Post Graduate, from the universities of Southampton, Southampton Solent, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Winchester, Chichester (incl Bognor Regis Campus).

Thinking of joining us for a student life less ordinary?  All you have to do is follow these 3 simple steps:

STEP 1 - FIND US AT THE FRESHERS’ FAIR.

We will be attending Freshers’ Fairs for Southampton, Solent, Winchester, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, Chichester.  Look out for us - we’ll be wearing our famous pink and black rugby tops. More info about the entry requirements here: http://www.army.mod.uk/UOTC/32107.aspx.  If you're still not sure, come down and ask us in person at the Open Evening.  Complete and return the Application Form to RMAS-Gp-OTCSouthampton-Admin@mod.uk

STEP 2 - ATTEND AN OPEN EVENING AT 32 CARLTON PLACE (SO15 2DX)

Come and see us at an Open Evening even if you missed us at the Freshers’ Fair. This is our chance to show you what we get up to.  We’ll be showcasing all we have to offer including military skills, adventurous training, sports, social events and everything else we do, there will be something for you.  Whilst visiting us, you can ask questions directly to the students that have served some time in SUOTC and get the information direct from your peers.  Our existing Officer Cadets will host you for the night and you’ll get to see the training environment, have something to eat and experience our onsite Bar!

Although it’s a relatively informal evening we ask that you wear smart casual clothes (men: shirt with collar) (no jeans or trainers).  If you have friends that might be interested too please bring them along.  All the Open Evenings are from 7.00pm – 9.00pm (drinks afterwards 'til 10.00pm).

STEP 3 – ATTEND A SELECTION EVENT

We have a lot of people who want to join.  All applicants are invited to attend selection events, to see if they like what they see and if they have what it takes to live a student life less ordinary. The selection event will consist of a medical, basic fitness test, interview, group command task and documentation.  If you are interested in self-development, leadership training, playing sport, adventure training (sailing, trekking, climbing, skiing and more) then Southampton UOTC is the place for you.

Mission statement

"To offer selected students and Potential Officers for the Army Reserve the chance to develop their leadership potential through the medium of military and adventurous training with the twin purpose of promoting Regular or Reserve service with the Army and of creating a positive impression of the Army among individual participants and the university communities more broadly."

Thinking of joining us?

Southampton UOTC comprises of two Companies (A & B), with A Coy being the 1st Year Coy (MODA) and B Coy being the 2nd Year Coy (MODB).  Drill Nights are on a Tuesday evening and are where you will learn the military skills which you will put to use on weekends away.  All training culminates in a two-week Annual Camp in June/July.  We will be recruiting at the Freshers Fairs in September/October.  Our stands will be run by current Officer Cadets who should be able to answer your questions.

We also offer

Sport

Sport is seen as an important part of your military training, and while at SUOTC you will get the chance to participate in a number of different sports.  Over the past few years, SUOTC has reached the semi-finals of Divisional Army Football and participated in Army Reserve National Hockey Tournaments and the Army Swimming Championships.  Our main sports are rugby, football, hockey, netball and orienteering but unit members also participate in fencing and equestrian competitions.

Adventurous Training

SUOTC takes part in a number of Adventurous Training (AT) expeditions each year, many of which are created and run by Officer Cadets, with help from the Unit staff.  The Unit has taken part in many landmark AT exercises, to areas such as the Himalayas, Corsica, Peru and Gambia.  Sailing and skiing also form part of the AT element.

Social

We have one of the busiest and most varied social scenes in the area.  Events are a way of educating cadets in Mess etiquette and give a taste of life in a Regular and Reserve Army Officers' Mess.  The Officer Cadets have their own Mess with a Bar, which is open during social events and after training on Tuesday nights.  Some of our key annual events include Spring Dinner Night, Sportsmen's Dinner Night, Autumn Dinner Night and the Christmas Ball.
