Sport and competition
Exeter UOTC in action
As you can imagine sport is very important at Exeter UOTC. Sport is used to develop leadership and teamwork, as well as maintain physical fitness and we expect the third (and second) year students to play an active role in organising and leading the teams.
We have several different sports teams (male, female and mixed) but the main ones are football, rugby union, hockey, swimming, biathlon and cross country. Duathlon is a new event the unit is now taking part in.
All sport is organised and run by the cadets. Our Rugby, Football and Hockey teams often compete against other University clubs, as well as other military units. One of the sporting highlights of the year is the Queen's Cup hosted at Sandhurst, where Exeter OTC holds their own against the other 18 OTCs
...But if you have an interest in a sport not already played, then set up your own team, we'll give it a go!
For those who are deemed tough enough, there is also the opportunity to compete in the annual Cambrian Patrol, a prestigious infantry competition held in the Brecon Beacons. We also put teams forward for the Nijmegan marches and Iron Man.
Within the military there is a lot of friendly competition between different units. This competition can either be in the form of sport, both individual and team, or skills within a certain field, such as Engineering (bridges, demolitions, etc) Signals (communications), and Infantry.
