Sports, leisure and training

Throughout your time at MSUOTC, there will be many opportunities to take part in a wide range of sports, leisure and training opportunities.

Sports

MSUOTC is actively involved in a number of sports and fields  its own teams for rugby, football, hockey, netball, cross country running and pentathlon.

Other sports activities include boxing training and rock climbing (there is a large climbing wall for you to try your hand).

We have a very successful Shooting team that trains on the 25m indoor range and takes part in a number of competitions in the UK and overseas.

Duke of Edinburgh Award

Many of your UOTC activities can count towards your Duke of Edinburgh Award. Local community work is encouraged alongside the more adventurous activities and many of the instructing staff are qualified to sign off your training for all 3 Award levels.

Adventurous training

Every year, MSUOTC runs a number of UK and overseas adventure training activities. If you are really into Adventurous Training, we'll also show you which qualifications you'll need to gain to plan and lead your own expeditions with the unit.

Over the last 12 months, we did:

  • Hill walking and Climbing in the Italian Dolomites
  • Scuba diving in Egypt
  • Hill walking along Hadrian's wall in Scotland
  • Annual downhill skiing trip in France
  • Hill walking in Wales
  • Sailing in Gosport / Channel Islands
  • Hill walking, kayaking and white water rafting in South Africa
  • Climbing, hill walking, kayaking, kite surfing and horse riding in North Devon
  • Climbing in Bavaria.

Social activities

MSUOTC thrives on the classic 'work hard play hard' approach to life.

At University Barracks, we run our own exclusive 'club' with bar and catering facilities. The 'Officers Mess' is only open to members and invited guests with a monthly programme of events organised by the Mess Committee, including quiz nights, fancy dress parties, club nights as well as several big annual events.

Regimental Dinner Night is held every November and on the final night of Annual Camp in June.  Everyone gets to dress up in Mess Kit, Dinner Jacket for gentlemen or Long Dresses for ladies for a traditional military dinner night.  This means Regimental Silver on the table, a military band playing in the background, a Loyal Toast and 'Pass the Port' at the end of the meal.  It is a fantastic evening and very different to anything else you will experience at University!

Former members Party/Dinner is an annual event which gives former UOTC members a chance to mix with current members, catch up with old friends and relive old memories.

MSUOTC Ball is a large scale event held at University Barracks each Spring with a specific theme. Last year, it was 'Arabian Nights' with belly dancers, fire eaters, and snake charmers. This is usually accompanied by an all night disco with a 'Survivors' photo and breakfast the next morning.

Parents and Friends Evening and Dinner. Remembrance Sunday is an important date for us and the unit goes on parade in Manchester City Centre as part of the military commemorations. Parents and Friends are invited to come and visit our facilities and sample our hospitality the evening before.

Charity Functions plays an important part in our social calendar and local community support activities, supporting organisations such as the Army Benevolent Fund and Manchester's 'Cash for Kids' Appeal.
