Oliver Baybut-Peyton
Officer Cadet Oliver Baybut-Peyton - 1 Section, 2 Platoon
I joined the UOTC as my father is in the Territorial Army and is always talking about how much fun he has in his spare time career.
So when I started at university, I found out about the UOTC and decided to give it a go and see if he was right.
As I am studying to become a teacher, I also thought that the skills and qualifications that I could get during my time with the unit would stand me in really good stead once I graduate.
I really enjoy the sense of achievement at the end of a UOTC training weekend in the field. Being tested to your limits can be a real challenge, but actually doing it and coming through, having completed all the goals set, is extremely satisfying.
Through the UOTC I have made some really good friends studying at several other universities. We have supported, helped and pushed each other through stressful situations and it has brought us closer together.
It has given me confidence that I never thought that I would, or could ever, possess. It has also made me very proud of myself, friends and the unit.
I would recommend the UOTC to anyone because of all the great experiences that I have had during my short time here so far.
The unit's philosophy helps you identify both your strengths and the areas that you need to develop to become a good leader; it then offers a vast array of opportunities and a coaching network to help you improve your employability.
The UOTC has given me a lot of self-confidence that I know will help me for the rest of my life.
