Adventurous Training and Sport

Adventure Training and Sport Gallery

Adventurous Training develops leadership skills and individual self-confidence, while at the same time being great fun.

Alongside this, Cambridge UOTC maintains a newly-broadened programme of leadership, sporting, fitness and charity (specifically for our affiliated Army Benevolent Fund, The Soldier's Charity) activities.

In the past two years we have also conducted:

  • Sandhurst Leadership Training with the Inspirational Development Group (IDG)
  • Alpine skiing and ski-racing in France
  • Trekking in the Cascade Mountains, Washington State, USA
  • Trekking in Morocco with the British Schools Exploring Society
  • Medical electives in Belize and Brunei
  • A 1000 mile Round UK Cycle Race against Oxford
  • Paragliding and Parachuting in Germany
  • Sailing expeditions in the Baltic
  • The 3-Peaks 24 Hour Mountain Challenge (Ben Nevis, Snowdon, Scafell Pike)
  • A two-week conservation project in South-East UK

Cambridge UOTC has also developed into one of the strongest minor units in sport. 3 members won BAE Systems Army Sports Scholarships for 2012. Also during 2011-12:

  • Cambridge UOTC became Inter-Services Fencing Champions
  • OCdt Emma Byatt (Jesus College, Cambridge) became the Army Ladies and Inter-Services Fencing Champion 2011-12 and toured with the Combined Services Team in Canada
  • Josh Mouland (King's College, Cambridge) became the current Number 2 ranked Decathlete in the Combined Services and UK Double Decathlon Champion (2011-12)
  • OCdt Zoe Rutterford (Darwin College, Cambridge) became Army Modern Pentathlon Champion 2011-12
  • OCdt Claire Wheatman (UEA) became the GB Ski-Cross Junior Champion 2010 and is training with the GB Slalom and GS Ski Team 2011-12

  • OCdt Polly Keen (Downing College, Cambridge) gained a GB top-10 athlete (distance running) ranking for Steeplechase and a top 20 ranking for Cross-Country

The OTC contains a great many other individual sporting stars from the University especially in Rowing, Rugby, Modern Pentathlon (the Commanding Officer is also Chairman of Army Modern Pentathlon), Running and Skiing.
