Military Training
During the academic term, CUOTC trains on Monday evenings in Norwich and Tuesday evenings in Cambridge. There is also additional military training, including some integration with Regular and TA Army units, every other weekend.
Michaelmas Term. Emphasis during the Michaelmas Term is on the Military Leadership Development Programme (MLDP) syllabus designed by The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Recruits undertake MLDP 1 training, which is tailored to enable them to prepare and equip themselves, live in the field and conduct low-level battle drills.
2nd year students undertake MLDP 2 training, which is leadership training recognised by the Chartered
Management Institute (certified at Level 5). 3rd year (and above) students generally provide the instructors for MLDP 1 and 2. In addition, some of the more experienced students take part in the Cambrian Patrol, the British Army's premier patrolling competition in the Welsh mountains.
This year (October 2011) Cambridge won a Silver Medal and between 2001-2011 it has gained no fewer than 3 Gold, 5 Silver and 2 Bronze medals.
Lent Term. In the Lent Term the focus is on special-to-arm training. There are 4 wings: Infantry, Royal Armoured Corps, Royal Artillery, and Combat Support (comprising Royal Engineers and Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers). Each is led by a TA officer as Officer Commanding (OC) and a Regular Army Permanent Staff Instructor (PSI) Warrant Officer as the lead instructor.
Easter Term. During the Easter Term (summer), the student priority is to his or her exams so we only offer training once a fortnight and focus on 'lighter' activities as a break from the pressure of academic revision.
One highlight is the 2-week Annual Camp. The 2011 Annual Camp was in Kent and Northern France, and this year (2012) we have an outstanding 2 weeks on the West Coast of Scotland (Garelochhead). Cambridge UOTC is also involved in the London 2012 Olympics (15 July-13 August), and again with a strong team working with US Army in Fort Lewis (near Seattle) on the prestigious Leadership Development Assessment Course (LDAC).
Shooting. CUOTC has a very strong shooting tradition, winning numerous regional and national prizes. We are the current Brigade Operational Shooting Champions (2011-12) and the unit boasts a remarkable list of individual achievers: OCdt Henry Day (UEA - GB Full Bore Rifle Team) is currently ranked 30th best rifle shot in the world; OCdt Vin Shen Ban (Christ's College, Cambridge) is the Army Pistol Champion (2011-12); Capt James Tilbrook was the 2010-11 TA Clay Shooting Champion. The Commanding Officer is also ex-officio President of the Cambridge University Rifle Association (CURA).
