Adventure Training
Adventure training (AT) forms a central focus of UOTC training, and is designed to encourage leadership and teamwork through the medium of challenge outdoors.
Skiing, mountaineering, sailing, rock climbing, canoeing and kayaking all come under the umbrella of AT.
While at UOTC, there is scope to attend courses and obtain qualifications in all the AT disciplines, the majority of which are transferable into the civilian world.
CEUOTC organises a ski trip on an annual basis to the French Alps, with all cadets coming away with the minimal basic qualification of Basic Skiing Proficiency. Many progress to the level that enables them to become ski instructors, a highly sought after qualification that would cost hundreds to obtain in the civilian world.
Additionally, a 5 week ski touring expedition to New Zealand is being planned for summer 2009, which will see 20 cadets heading half way across the globe to embark on uphill and downhill skiing.
Mountaineering is also a discipline that has featured heavily on CEUOTC's calendar in recent years with an expedition to Ecuador taking place in June 2007 to climb some of South America's highest peaks.
Vietnam has also been the location of a similar expedition organised 4 years ago. Several officer cadets hold their Mountain Leader Training (MLT) qualification, a highly desirable quality that enables them to lead a group day expedition on the hills.
Ultimately, if there is an adventure sport you are interested in, CEUOTC will enable you to partake in a course and more often than not, get paid to attend. Furthermore, you will come away with a qualification that will not only look very attractive on your CV but will also open doors to future Army expeditions and courses to improve your aptitude and experience in a particular discipline.
