Military training

Sheffield UOTC gives its members the opportunity to learn a little about the military, and a lot about themselves. Additionally, it pays them for the activities they carry out.

The opportunities offered include:

  • Military training with a focus on leadership development and team work
  • Adventure training such as rock climbing, skiing and skydiving - often conducted overseas
  • Sports such as rugby, football, netball and hockey
  • An unrivalled social life
  • The opportunity to travel
  • The opportunity to gain the City and guilds Leadership award
  • Recognition within the Sheffield University Graduate Award Scheme 

Sheffield UOTC welcomes new Officer Cadets once a year during Fresher's Week.

The process will take place in 2009 from 21 September. For three weeks from this date you can either visit Somme Barracks on Glossop Road in Sheffield, or you can speak to members of Sheffield UOTC at any of the following locations:

  • The Concourse (Sheffield University)
  • The Edge, Main Car Park (Sheffield University)
  • The Atrium, second floor by the main stairs (Sheffield Hallam)
  • Collegiate Crescent, outside the learning centre (Sheffield Hallam) 

If you are interested in joining Sheffield UOTC, you should note the following key dates.

  • Visit Sheffield UOTC between 21 September and 2 October 2009.
  • Fresher's Cocktails - Tuesday 29 September - Sheffield UOTC will host introductory drinks in their bar at Somme Barracks. This is a chance for all those who are interested in joining to meet each other and the staff who will be running the training.
  • Exercise CUTLER'S WELCOME - 3 October. This is an enjoyable weekend of sport and a BBQ aimed at breaking down barriers between new members, integrating and welcoming them.
  • Introductory weekend - 9 -11 October -  Sheffield UOTC will hold an introductory weekend for all of those who wish to join. This weekend will give you the opportunity to get a better idea of what we do. The activities start with a run of 1.5 miles which you need to complete in under 14 minutes in order to be able to join.
  • Administration - there is paperwork and a basic medical to be completed before you can join. This must be complete by 9 October 2009.  You will need you passport and/or birth certificate, a second form of photo-based ID such as a driving licence or student card, your National Insurance number and two passport-sized photographs.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

If I join the OTC will I have to join the Army when I leave University?
No. Whilst some of our members do go on to join the Regular or Territorial Army there is absolutely no commitment to do this.

Will I be expected to serve on operations overseas?
Officer Cadets in full time Higher Education cannot be compelled to undertake service on operations overseas.

If I join the OTC and then decide it is not for me, do I have to stay?
Serving in the OTC is entirely voluntary and you may leave at any time.

How much time will I be expected to commit to the OTC?
The OTC training is designed to fit around your degree. We train on Wednesday evenings for two hours starting at 7.00pm, and on one or two weekends per month. Additionally, we undertake an annual two week exercise (occasionally overseas) from the day that the Universities break up for summer in June.
