Adventurous Training
Liverpool UOTC Adventurous Training Gallery
Adventure training is used to foster teamwork, develop morale and self confidence and increase physical well-being. Liverpool UOTC offers a wide range of adventure training activities to choose from each year and participation follows the leadership development cycle.
- Year 1 - Sample various adventure training activities mostly on annual camp and attend an expedition to gain a basic qualification
- Year 2 - Choose a preferred activity, gain an advanced qualification in it and use it on an expedition.
- Year 3 - Lead or help organise an expedition in your preferred activity.
All equipment is provided by the Army, as is all instruction, travel, accommodation and food - and you get paid! Liverpool UOTC offers the following adventure training options and we actively encourage students who already have the appropriate qualifications to come forward to help with develop the novices on expeditions:
SKIING
Our skiing covers both the downhill (Alpine) and cross country (Nordic) versions. We have recent staged expeditions to Tignes, Alps D'Huez and Les Deuz Alpes and regularly compete in military skiing competitions.
- Year 1 - Learn the basics and gain confidence on dry ski slopes. Attain ski proficiency in Alpine and Nordic disciplines.
- Year 2 - Gain advanced progression in Alpine and Nordic.
- Year 3 - Attend tour leader training and become a ski instructor (Alpine and Nordic) and organise a skiing expedition.
ROCK CLIMBING
Recent expeditions have been to Bavaria, Canada, Scotland and Wales.
- Year 1 - Learn the basics on an indoor climbing wall, attend the rock faced familiarisation day on annual camp, attain a rock climbing proficiency qualification.
- Year 2 - Become a rock leader.
- Year 3 - Qualify as a climbing instructor and organise a challenging climbing expedition.
MOUNTAINEERING
Mountaineering is the activity between rock climbing and hiking. You hike to the top of a mountain but you may be on your hands and knees for some of it. Recent expeditions have been to Snowdonia, the Lake District and Bavaria.
- Year 1 - Attend a local expedition or the mountaineering day at camp
- Year 2 - Become a mountain leader.
- Year 3 - Organise an expedition.
MOUNTAIN BIKING
We have recently invested in a fleet of our own high tech mountain bikes. Recent expeditions include a circumnavigation of Mont Blanc, the Marin Trail in Wales and others in the Lake District and Dartmoor.
- Year 1 - Attend a local event or the mountain biking day at camp
- Year 2 - Become a mountain bike leader.
- Year 3 - Organise an expedition.
KAYAKING
LUOTC has its own canoes and has staged white water expeditions in Canada, Dartmoor, Scotland, Snowdonia and the Lake District.
- Year 1 - Attend the kayaking familiarisation day at annual camp and attend a further week in Wales to gain 2 Star qualification.
- Year 2 - Attend a 3 star kayaking progression course.
- Year 3 - Become a Level 1 or 2 coach and run a kayaking expedition.
SUB-AQUA DIVING
Recent expeditions to Jordan, Eygpt and Cyprus.
- Year 1 - Try dive on annual camp and weekend pool training.
- Year 2 - Become a BSAC Sports diver.
- Year 3 - Qualify as a BSAC dive leader.
SAILING
New to LUOTC, but this year we are looking to join a military regatta in the Baltic Sea.
- Year 1 - Introduction to sailing on annual camp.
- Year 2 - Become an RYA Competent Crew.
- Year 3 - Become an RYA Day Skipper or even a Coastal Skipper.
