The principal medium for developing leadership at Liverpool UOTC is through a syllabus of basic infantry training.  

Most of the learning happens at the mid-week training evenings and the majority of the practical training is delivered over 5 themed weekends, a couple of assessment periods and over a week of annual camp.

Military Training

YEAR 1 (A WING) - BASIC

  • Core Values - understand the importance of courage, discipline, respect for others, integrity, loyalty and selfless-commitment.
  • Team Work - learn what it takes to be an effective team member.
  • Military Knowledge - learn about the Army as a work organisation.
  • Fitness - a healthy body sustains a healthy mind.
  • First Aid - learn how to care for a battle casualty.
  • Navigation - learn how to read a map and use a compass properly to navigate across country by day and night.
  • Survival/fieldcraft skills - learn how to live and survive outside using only the kit you are carrying. Learn how to look after your equipment.
  • Weapon Handling - learn how to strip, assemble, clean and fire the SA80A2 Assault Rifle.

Any students who feel that they have already covered these subjects before (for example in the Army Cadet Force) will be considered for fast tracking into B Wing.

Military Training

YEAR 2 (B WING) - ADVANCED

  • Estimate Process - this will teach you the basics of problem solving to arrive at a logical and comprehensive solution in both military and non-military situations.
  • Orders Process - learn how to deliver a full set of Battle Orders at Section and Platoon Level.
  • Advanced Navigation and First Aid - build upon A Wing knowledge.
  • Radio Procedure - learn how to use military radios and voice procedure.
  • Confirmatory Exercise - Module 3 is a demanding 3-day exercise in the field.
  • At the end of Year 2, each year we encourage about 10 officer cadets to attend the TA Commissioning Course at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.   
Military Training

YEAR 3 (C WING) - THE LEADERS

  • Lead an infantry platoon of 26 officer cadets using your training gained at the UOTC and Sandhurst.
  • Be a platoon sergeant responsible for the administration and discipline of 26 officer cadets.
  • Lead an infantry section of 8 officer cadets using your training gained at the UOTC. 
  • Organise and lead a battlefield tour.
  • Teach parts of the military syllabus.

  • Patrols competitions - in the North West, nationally and internationally.
  • UOTC weekends sponsored by the different Arms and Services of the Army.
  • Attachments for up to 2 weeks with Army units all over the world.
